Why is goal setting as important as goal achievement?

When you set out to go anywhere, the first thing you decide is the destination where you want to go. Then you look for the means to go there. You set your goalpost so that you can reach exactly at that place where your destination is. First and foremost activity is setting your goal. Decide what you want to do in life. What you want to achieve. Where you want to go. Where do you see yourself in a timeline, say after 1 year, after 3 years and after 5 years and so on. Decide your direction. Set your goal. The goals so set should be as they are achievable. They should be realistic. In our course of goal setting and achievement, we detail out the process of setting up of your goals.

There are certain formulae on the basis of those the goals can be set. The goal setting must confirm to certain guidelines. These formulae and guidelines are given in detail in our programs. A person can set any goal or goals as per his requirement, his education, his background, his ambitions and desires in life and his overall surroundings and situations.

Many people pass their life on the principles of la cera cera. We will see what will happen. They do not plan anything. Do not desire for big things, however, they dream for them. Dreams and desire are two paradigms. Only dreaming will not help. Desire is a step ahead where the element of action is reflected. Desire with a purpose, for a purpose will what makes the goal achievable. In my book, ‘My way, your way, that’s the way’ I have exhorted the people to desire and not only restrict yourself to day dreaming. Desire big things in life. when you ask for stars then only you will end up with moon. But, if you ask for moon, you may end up with small little achievements. Setting big goals and aiming high in life is most important.

When late Sh. Dhirubhai Ambani, the doyen of Reliance group was only a fuel issuer at a patrol station, he aimed high for being an owner of oil refinery. Looks very unoptimistic at the face of it. I have been to one of his offices in Mumbai where the slogan written at the entrance is ‘Aim high, it does not cost money’. The words may be different but the crux is the same. So, setting of the goals is very important.

Once the goals are set, now comes the action part. It is said that ‘the long journey starts with the first step. Or the journey of a life time starts with the first step. The process of action taken is though little difficult at times yet it must be gone through. The action to be taken must also be commensurate with the kind and type of goal set. With the action steps you put the possibility of goal setting onto the path of achievement.

It is important to keep the goal into focus and keep taking action irrespective of whether goal will be achieved or not. In Bhagvat Gita, Lord Krishna has propounded the theory of action without waiting or worrying for results. Similar should be our approach. If you focus too much on the results, your actions get polluted. The results and goals are important for your knowing and setting the direction but their achievements are left in the hands of Almighty.

So, concentrate all your energy in the beginning in setting the goals. Take a few lessons from the experts. Read motivational stories and biographies of great achievers.

A train can run only when the tracks are properly laid and set for the load to bear. Once the goals are set properly, the action and achievements follow.
